The Billirrawarra

The Billirrawarra

Billirrawarra – The Black Cockatoo

The name Billirrawarra comes from the Larrakia language and means black cockatoo. The Larrakia people are the traditional owners and custodians of the Darwin region, and their connection to land, sea, and sky is deeply embedded in language, stories, and culture.

Kattie Risk, founder and managing director of Billirrawarra, is a proud Larrakia woman. Who chose this name to honour her people and their enduring role as caretakers of Darwin and its surrounds. The black cockatoo is a bird of strength, resilience, and presence. Its call is distinctive, carrying across country as a reminder of the ties between people, place, and nature.

For us, the black cockatoo is more than a symbol. It represents vision, adaptability, and community — values that guide the way we work and the standards we uphold every day.
