Safety & Compliance

Billirrawarra Trucking & Training

At Billirrawarra Trucking & Training (BT&T), safety, professionalism, and regulatory compliance form the foundation of everything we do.

Heavy vehicle operations carry significant responsibility. Our training and transport services are delivered under structured safety systems designed to protect our students, workers, clients, and the broader community.

Work Health & Safety Management System

BT&T operates under a comprehensive Work Health & Safety (WHS) Management System designed specifically for heavy vehicle operations and driver training.

Our safety framework includes policies and procedures covering:

• workplace health and safety responsibilities

• fatigue management

• drug and alcohol policies

• safe driving and vehicle maintenance

• incident reporting and investigation

• hazard identification and risk management

• worker and student safety inductions

Our systems align with the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act 2011 and relevant Northern Territory safety codes of practice.

Heavy Vehicle Training Standards

Training delivered by Billirrawarra Trucking & Training is designed to align with Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) heavy vehicle licensing standards.

Training programs include structured instruction in:

• vehicle familiarisation and safety checks

• reversing and manoeuvring techniques

• load awareness and vehicle stability

• hazard perception and defensive driving

• safe operation in real traffic environments

Students must demonstrate competency in accordance with regulatory requirements before progressing to the final licensing assessment.

Student Safety

Safety is a shared responsibility between instructors and students.

All students complete a safety induction before practical training, ensuring they understand their responsibilities, potential hazards, and the safety procedures required during training.

Students are expected to:

• follow instructor directions at all times

• operate vehicles responsibly and safely

• report hazards or incidents immediately

• ensure they are fit for duty during training sessions

Training may be suspended if safety standards are not maintained.

Fatigue and Fitness for Duty

Fatigue is one of the most significant safety risks in the transport industry, particularly across the long distances and demanding conditions of Northern Australia.

BT&T maintains strict fatigue and fitness-for-duty policies to ensure that both trainers and students are able to operate vehicles safely.

Training sessions may be paused or rescheduled if fatigue or other safety concerns are identified.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

BT&T maintains a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol while operating vehicles or participating in training.

All trainers and students must maintain a 0.00% Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) when operating company vehicles or conducting practical training.

Any person suspected of impairment will be removed from training immediately for safety reasons.

Vehicle Safety and Maintenance

Our vehicles and equipment are treated as critical workplaces and must meet strict safety standards.

BT&T ensures that all training vehicles:

• are maintained and serviced according to manufacturer requirements

• undergo regular safety inspections

• are withdrawn from service immediately if a safety-critical issue is identified

Pre-start safety checks are conducted before training sessions.

Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement

BT&T encourages open reporting of hazards, incidents, and near misses so that safety risks can be addressed before harm occurs.

Incident reporting systems allow us to:

• investigate incidents thoroughly

• identify root causes

• implement corrective actions

• continuously improve our safety practices

This proactive approach helps ensure ongoing improvement across all operations.

Cultural Safety and Respect

Billirrawarra Trucking & Training recognises that safe workplaces also require respect for people and culture.

As a proud Larrakia-owned business, we are committed to creating culturally safe environments where all individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Cultural respect is integrated into our workplace practices and training delivery.

Our Commitment

At Billirrawarra Trucking & Training, we believe that strong safety systems, professional training standards, and respect for people and culture are essential to building a safer transport industry.

We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, and professionalism in everything we do.
